Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm
1060 Pine Ln., Clayton
Reviewed 10/05/13 by Hauntmistress
With humble beginnings as a u-pick vegetable stand in 1980, the Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm has grown into a must-stop pumpkin patch for many residents of the greater Clayton area.
With its picturesque setting amidst mountains and trees, the patch is perfect for taking photos and enjoying the Halloween season. The slightly sloped field is decorated with wooden bats and other creatures and houses many different varieties of pumpkins, including the standard orange, white, warty, and giants. They are priced by size at a counter before you go to the register to pay. The top price for a standard orange is around $20. We had a hard time swallowing the pumpkin prices at the Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm when we visited in 2004, but now they are well in-line with other patches in the area. In fact, they are slightly less than the Shadelands Ranch Pumpkin Patch in nearby Walnut Creek.
Kids will love playing in the giant tunnel of straw (made with more than 650 straw bales), the three giant pots filled with lima beans, and more in the Plumkin Playland ($7). Monday through Friday from 3 pm to dusk and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to dusk adults and kids can take a train ride around the gardens, past the animals, and through a tunnel ($2.50). Plus, don’t forget to say hello to the cute goats, pigs, and chickens!
While the kids play, the adults can shop in the wonderful gift shop. It offers mini pumpkins and gourds, Indian corn, home and yard decorations, goodies, costume Halloween jewelry, and more. There are also potted plants for sale to give your home a little seasonal color! The staff in the gift shop and the patch are very nice if you need help with anything.
All this activity is sure to make you hungry, so stop by the Slow Hand BBQ stand for a sandwich on the weekends from 11 am-5 pm.
