CIFF Haunted House
New Rheem Theatre, 350 Park St., Moraga
The California Independent Film Festival (CIFF) has found a great location for its haunted house: The New Rheem Theatre in Moraga.
In addition to sponsoring the theatre’s Friday Night of Fright, where classic movies are shown, CIFF’s haunted house gives a taste of classic scary movies.
When you enter the haunt, you follow small red theatre lights down a long, dark aisle, not knowing what may pop out at you or what awaits you at the end of the path. You end up on the stage, and then the haunt takes you though the back of the theater, utilizing the space well and offering many rooms in a relatively small space.
Throughout the haunt the actors were good and offered a few startles, but the “stars” of the show were the beautiful rooms. They were very well decorated and had great props and many full-sized characters. A few of my favorite rooms were the execution room, clown room, and meat locker. But my absolute favorites were the Christmas rooms. They were superbly decorated and creepy, with an uninvited guest peeking in the window.
The haunt has a claustrophobia chamber and I always appreciate that type of added feature in a haunt. Like a vortex tunnel, it adds a little something special to the experience.
There can be a wait to get in if there are parties in front of you. We had to wait for about 15 minutes because we got to the haunt just after two groups had arrived.
While Moraga may be a bit off the beaten path, this haunt is fun and worth a stop if you’re in the area.
