Pirates of Emerson
Alameda County Fairgrounds, Bernal Ave. and Valley Ave., Pleasanton
Reviewed 10/10/10 by Hauntmistress
Pirates of Emerson – The Haunting Fields has a new home this year, but its fun and spookiness remains unchanged.
Traditionally in Fremont, the haunt moved this year to Pleasanton. It appears the move is a success, as it was busier than I have ever seen it on a weeknight so early in October.
The Haunting Fields occupies a big area in the Alameda County Fairgrounds (parking is $8). For $20 you can visit six attractions: Dig of the Dead, Nightscare Before Xmas, Killbilly Cabin, Bilge Rat Maze, Mananimal Lab, and, of course, Pirates of Emerson.
For an additional charge there are a few other attractions to enjoy, such as a Misfortune Teller.
All of the five haunts (I’m excluding Bilge Rat Maze, which is a fenced maze, not a decorated walk-through) are well decorated and perfectly fit their theme. The actors stay in character and pop out in unexpected places.
Aside from the haunts, the great pirate ship takes center stage when flames shoot from the top of it, illuminating the dimly lit grounds.
Also on the grounds you’ll find a CarnEvil with a few games, snacks and coffee available for purchase, and Seadog Cinema playing a selection of POE TV clips.
This is a good value for $20, considering there are haunts that charge $20 for just one walk-through. My one suggestion is to put more straw bales out for people to sit on – going through all these haunts is tiring!
