Goblyns Glen

Oak Meadow Park, 233 Blossom Hill Rd., Los Gatos

Reviewed 10/17/08

The pre-school crowd has a new place to hang – Goblyns Glen in Los Gatos. We visited on a dark night and there were tiny tots dressed in their Halloween costumes riding the train, merry-go-round, and trick or treating through Goblyns Glen.

Held at Oak Meadow Park, the former location of the Haunted Forest, Goblyns Glen is geared for the younger set, or the very young at heart, which includes me!

For $8 you can take a train ride, ride on the merry-go-round, and trick or treat through Goblyns Glen.

We started our visit by riding the train. It takes you through the park, lit only by the moon. It’s a relatively short ride, but the feel of the wind on your face and the darkness of the park make it a fun ride and perfect for the attention span of little ones. We’ve taken this train ride before at night and once again, we got caught in the sprinklers (we heard after our ride that they were going to turn the sprinklers off). But, the train sped up in order to make it through the other sprinklers without getting us wet, taking us on a fun high-speed ride for a short time. The train plays music as you take the ride, some of which is Halloween-related (like Ghostbusters and The Time Warp) and other songs that are not (like Macho Man).

Our next stop was Goblyns Glen. You get there by taking a ride on the merry-go-round, or you can walk through the merry-go-round to the entrance of the Glen, which is what we did. The merry-go-round seems fun for kids, but could have been spooked up a bit with skeletons riding one of the horses or cobwebs.

Goblyns Glen is like a little village where kids are given a trick or treat bag and can walk from “building” to “building” and trick or treat for candy and beads. The Glen is well done with a broom factory, spook school, and other themed storefronts. It also has a gallery of carved pumpkins on display (I didn’t know there was a pattern for a Jay Leno or Betty Boop pumpkin!). Fans of Department 56 and Spookytown will love the mini-village that was created with collectibles such as a haunted house and a pumpkin patch.

When you exit Goblyns Glen village you can get some tasty food from the BBQ, Otis Spunkmeyer cookies for $1 each, or have your face painted with special effects airbrush make-up.

Goblyns Glen is cute and has a Halloween atmosphere. It is sure to be a hit with the pre-school crowd.
