The Candle Lighters is a non-profit organization of approximately 130 women who work to raise money for community projects in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. Since 1969 they have been transforming the Chadbourne Carriage House into a community haunted house.

Although billed as a haunt primarily for children, this is a Halloween haunt the whole family can enjoy. Each year we are pleased by the attention to detail we see in their Ghost House and the wealth of games and activities they offer on their carnival midway. This year’s haunted house is called Scream Park and it takes you on a journey through a ghoulish amusement park.

When we arrived this year, the midway was packed with families playing games and having fun. There was a long line to get into the house, but it seemed to move pretty fast. Upon entering, we were immediately transported into a black light lit realm of the damned. A ghoulish barker told us to "step right up" and we made sure we did. We passed through a plethora of highly detailed rooms with carnival-like scenes, including a roller coaster and a fortuneteller! The actors were good at anticipating when we were going to walk into the room and would give us a good scare. While our trip through seemed much shorter than it had been in years past we weren't left unsatisfied.

For the very little ones and the true chickens, there is a “Good Fairy” line that allows families to go through the house without the jumps and scares the rest of us enjoy. Because the house has such detailed scenes, even the "Good Fairy" experience, without the actors scaring you, is fun and interesting.

And did I mention the haunt is only $2? What a value! Don't let the Rude Witch of the West deter you at the door to the Scream Park. Even if this is a "cheap date" it is so very much worth going. Take the other $6 or more that you would have spent at any other haunt to get a snack and a drink and play some games on their wonderful midway! They offer such items as corn dogs, caramel apples, and lollipops for snacks and games such as ring toss, pumpkin walk, and a wheel of fortune. They also have a General Store and costumed characters for photo ops.
