Winchester Mystery House Movie

9/11/2014 by Hauntmistress

A supernatural thriller based on the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose is in the works for an early 2015 release date tell and will tell the story of Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester firearms fortune.  The movie is being written and directed by filmmaking brothers Michael and Peter Spierig based on a script originally penned by Tom Vaughan.

After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, Sarah Winchester came to believe she was cursed by the rifle’s victims and the lethal legacy of the “gun that won the West.”  At the instruction of a spiritualist medium, she moved to San Jose in 1884 and began round-the-clock construction that would last 38 years and result in a 24,000 square foot, 160-room Gothic mansion.

“We can’t wait to see what the Spierig brothers unearth as they delve into the mysteries of Sarah Winchester and her infamous haunted house,” said Tobin Armbrust of Hammer Films, production company for the film.  “As the first feature film ever shot inside the Winchester Mystery House, we are excited to have these fantastic filmmakers bring their unique vision to the table.”

The Spierig brothers came to prominence in 2003 with their indie zombie film “Undead” and they have also collaborated with Ethan Hawke on “Daybreakers.”

The Winchester Mystery House has a startling history and attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists annually.  Known as the “house built for the spirits,” there have been many inexplicable ghost sightings there and to this day, visitors share their terrifying stories of having been in the presence of these departed souls who continue to roam the grounds of the intricate and enigmatic house.
