1999 Half Moon Bay
Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off

It's 7:30 in the morning at the I.D.E.S. Grounds in Half Moon Bay. Growers of giant pumpkins and the media have already been here for hours. Local news stations are setting up for live broadcasts while many growers are talking with each other exchanging tips for next year. The mood is light and spirits are high. Some after checking out the competition realize they have no chance of taking a prize but they don't mind because it's all about the fun of growing these noble giants.

People started showing up at 7 am to see the giants. Many compelled by spouses obsessed with learning the secrets of growing these mighty beasts. By 9 am the crowd had swollen to well over 100 people with dozens of children from local schools making their way to the weigh-off to witness history being made.

Moving these giants is no small feat. It is made easier through the use of forklifts but it still takes four men to move the largest pumpkins from the forklift to the scale.

Growers come from all walks of life and from all over the West. It has often been said that growing the giants is in the blood. It's no surprise then that this year featured so many youthful contenders.

There can be only one...
And the winner is:

Congratulations go out John Hunt from Elk Grove who won this year's Half Moon Bay Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off with a whopping 991 lb. pumpkin setting a new Half Moon Bay record. John's pumpkin was not the tallest measuring only 3'9" (Ron Baptist of San Jose's 583 pound pumpkin was 3'11" tall) but had an amazing 12'5" circumference! John out paced his nearest competitor, Kirk Mombert of Harrisburg Oregon by 242 lbs.!

John credits a secret blend of fertilizer he developed as well as the assistance of his good friend Charlie Armstrong. John's giant pumpkin is worth over $5,000 in cash prizes and will be featured at the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival and it's parade.
