Half Moon Bay
World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off,
Art & Pumpkin Festival

Mark your calendars, it's time again for the Half Moon Bay Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off and the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival.

World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, October 13, 2008

Festivities kick off with the West Coast's most prestigious gathering of titanic pumpkins and their fanatical growers in the 35th Annual World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, Monday, October 13th, 7:30 AM at the I.D.E.S. Grounds on Main Street in Half Moon Bay.

The question on everyone's lips this year is will someone beat carpetbagger Jake van Kooten's newly set California record of 1,536.5 pounds? Jake set the record at the Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin and Harvest Festival on October 4th beating the former state record held by Pete Glassier of Napa by just one pound and this after driving his pumpkin down from his home in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

The current world record, set last year, is held by Joe Jutras of Rhode Island and his 1,689 pound pumpkin.

While it's a long shot that we'll see a world record breaker at this year's weigh-off we're eager to see the California record return home to a California resident. Last year, Thad Starr of Pleasant Hill, Oregon won the Half Moon Bay competition and set a Half Moon Bay record for the heaviest pumpkin at the competition with a 1,524 pounder. With weights steadily increasing every year, we are tantilizingly close to seeing a new state record set this year. But will it be a California grower or a heavy grower from Oregon, Washington, or Canada who will take the king's share of the $20,000 in prize money up for grabs in this competition?

In addition to finding out the answer to this question, attendees will get to vote for the Most Beautiful Pumpkin, which will receive a special $500 prize.

The winning pumpkin will ride a float in the Great Pumpkin Parade and will be on display along with four runner-ups at the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 18-19, 2008.

Art & Pumpkin Festival, October 18-19, 2008

Half Moon Bay, the self proclaimed, Pumpkin Capital of the World, will host the 38th annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival October 18-19, 2008, 9 am-5 pm, on Main Street in Half Moon Bay.

Half Moon Bay celebrates the fall and harvest season with a display of heavy-weight champion pumpkins, a Great Pumpkin Parade with Will Clark of the San Francisco Giants as Grand Marshal, three stages of entertainment and live music, and craft booths that line Main Street. In addition, you'll find a haunted house, good eats and drinks, pumpkin carving demonstrations, and more. Don't forget to try your hand in the pie-eating, pumpkin carving or costume contests! Admission is free.
