Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off, October 8th
The world’s largest gathering of titanic pumpkins and their fanatical growers butt gourds in the 28th Annual World
Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, Monday, October 8th at 7:30 AM at the
I.D.E.S. Grounds in Half Moon Bay.
Contenders have entered from California, Oregon, and Washington gunning
for glory and hoping to capture the coveted title and a share of roughly
$15,000 in prize money ... in a pay-by-the-pound system, the winner will
receive $5 per pound for the champion pumpkin.
Defending the title is Kirk Mombert of Harrisburg, Oregon. Last year
Kirk took top honors with a 940 lbs Atlantic Giant. This year he is
competing with veteran challengers including seven past winners. The monster pumpkins will be
forklifted onto a meticulously calibrated 5-ton capacity digital scale.
Representatives from the San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner’s
Office of Weights, Sealers, and Measures will officiate the weighing.
The
winning pumpkin will ride the float in the Great Pumpkin Parade and will
be displayed at
the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 13-14.
Art & Pumpkin Festival, October 13-14th
Half Moon Bay, the self proclaimed, Pumpkin Capital of the World will
host the 31st annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival October 13
- 14 on Main Street in Half Moon Bay. The Art & Pumpkin Festival heralds the coming of "All Hallows Eve"
with a wickedly delicious lineup of rustic pumpkin patches,
harvest-inspired crafts, home style foods, blockbuster entertainment, the
Great Pumpkin Parade with Grand Marshal Orlando Cepeda, a Haunted House,
titanic weigh-off champion pumpkins, world-class pumpkin carvers, and
pie-eating, carving and costume contests. Admission is free. Presented
by the Half Moon Bay Beautification Committee.
